My first book, Tangles: A Story About Alzheimer’s, My Mother, and Me, has been published in Canada, the US, UK, Germany, France and Korea. I’m working with Giant Ant on a feature-length animation of Tangles. My second book, Agnes, Murderess, was published in Canada in September 2019 by Freehand Books, and has been getting some great reviews (see the list on the Agnes page).
I have an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia, and have been teaching comics classes there since 2012. It is really the best job in the world. You can read my teaching philosophy on the UBC Centre for Teaching and Learning’s teaching portfolio page (click on the tab called Teaching Philosophy Statement and scroll down to the selected examples — or here is a direct link.) I share one important aspect of my comics teaching in this short promo video for our program (with Ian Williams and Alix Ohlin):
I live in Vancouver, BC with my partner and my tiny dog. I’m recovering from the nine years I spent with murderous Agnes by exploring the lives of a growing group of characters who keep spilling out of my pen — it began with Therapy Pony and now they have a small group of friends, including Cheetah, pictured below. I collect these explorations on Instagram.
